Versus Hires Jonathan Anderson
November 29th, 2012 @ 11:04 AM - Paris
You cannot keep a good Northern Irishman down.
Versus has appointed Jonathan Anderson to design a new capsule collection for the Milan-based label; the first move by the house since it separated from designer Christopher Kane last week.
The house of Versace called the choice of Anderson, “the first of a series of collaborations which are part of the recently announced strategic repositioning of the brand under Donatella Versace’s creative leadership,” in a release on Thursday, Nov. 29.
Anderson, who launched his brand own J.W. Anderson, where the W stands for William, four years ago, is widely considered the most exciting, young avant-garde designer to have emerged in the London season in the past half decade.
His debut for Versus will be unveiled in a presentation in New York in either late March or early April 2013, and will include both men’s and women’s fashion and accessories. The house plans to retail the line on both in its own digital platform and in major department stores or specialty boutiques worldwide.
Born in Magherafelt, Northern Ireland in 1984, Anderson initially yearned to be an actor before going on to study menswear at the London College of Fashion. Noted for his soft lilt and movie star looks, Anderson launched his own label in 2008 with a men’s collection, subsequently adding women’s wear to his range. Though the young designer is arguably most famous for his futurist boots and sneakers.
“I keep a close eye on young talent, and have been impressed by Jonathan’s work over the last couple of years,” stressed Donatella Versace.
A truly excellent conceptualist, Anderson rocked London in September, whose collection for retailer Top Shop was part ode to wacky futurism, part thesis in ironic deconstructionism. Mini dresses with asymmetrical apron-like attachments, worn over Power Pop moon boots, the sort of footwear a fierce babe would wear clubbing if Paris nightclub impresario Andre Sariva ever opened up Mars.
Earlier this year, Anderson won the Emerging Talent Award for Ready-to-Wear in the British Fashion Awards.
“Versus is all about fun, change, and digital. I can’t wait to present this collaboration!” insisted Donatella Versace of Anderson.
He succeeds fellow Celt Kane, a Scotsman from Glasgow, whose departure was announced last Monday.
