Betsey Johnson’s Saucy Babydolls
Lauren David Peden
September 13th, 2006 @ 00:29 AM - New York
Most people celebrate the birth of their first grandchild by buying a little gift - or twelve - and taking a snapshot - or fifty. Designer Betsey Johnson celebrated the birth of her granddaughter, Layla, by devoting her entire show, dubbed “Babycakes” and presented Tuesday, September 12, 2006 in Bryant Park, to the newest addition to the Johnson clan.
The glossy black runway was lined, as always, with café tables, this time topped with pale pink moire tablecloths upon which sat trays of pale pink iced cupcakes, and the backdrop featured what looked like a pale pink padded crib headboard. Too cute.
The clothes also hewed to the sugar and spice and everything nice theme, with pinafores, rompers, playsuits, jumpers, pedal pushers and, yes, babydoll dresses boasting frothy ruffles and pin tucking and bows and puff sleeves and rickrack trim in innocent shades of white, pale pink, lilac, peach and yellow.
Things went from innocent to not so in the middle of the program, with body-conscious, ‘50s-style black sheaths, tight high-waisted short shorts, a ‘40s-style smocked polka dot halter swimsuit and one unexpectedly sophisticated black chantilly lace jumper - one of the very few items that didn’t reference the “Leave It to Beaver”-era - being shown to a soundtrack that included remixes of Bow Wow Wow’s “I Want Candy” and The Waitresses’ “I Know What Boys Like.” Does she ever.
Babycakes ended with a return-to-sweet series of pouffy satin prom dresses, and then the ageless, indefatigable Johnson danced down the runway holding baby Layla in her arms, the child’s eyes as wide as saucers. She handed the infant to her daughter, Lulu, before doing her signature post-show cartwheel, which brought the crowd, including Philip Bloch, Patricia Field and Beth Ostrosky, to its feet, where they remained even after the models came out for their final strut carrying huge pink balloons that had smaller, udder-like balloons hanging from them.
As always, it was an udderly fun-tastic show.
