Meadham Kirchhoff’s Cool Quirky Commodities
Godfrey Deeny
February 21st, 2012 @ 3:40 PM - London
Can comic books ever be really glamorous? They can in the hands of Meadham Kirchhoff, an off-beat London design duo that have carved out a unique niche for themselves as purveyors of frolicking fashion.
Their latest show, staged Tuesday, Feb. 21, in London, had all the absurdist elements one associates with this brand - but also lots of great commercial clobber.
Staged before a soundtrack of electronic funk in a customized show space deep within a massive red brick building on the banks of the Thames, this was a hit event - from the quirky combinations of cowboy shirt over plaid party skirts to semi-sheer granny dresses for the adorably daffy art-obsessed woman.
What worked best were the arty tartan cocktail dresses, cut with a deep gorge and worn with glitter shirts and sequined bras. Sounds wacky? It was, but also rather marvelous. Plus, each individual look in this spritely fall 2012 collection worked on its own. In fashion, professionals call this an item driven collection, and Meadham Kirchhoff's latest show was all the better for that.
Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff met while studying in the world's most famous fashion college - Central Saint Martins. Today they had the most composed and appealing show in London Fashion Week, in what was surely the most professional and important season ever in this great global capital.
It was not just the return of Stella McCartney with her two-class - celebrities on one side, all of the rest of the planet on the other - show, but also a brilliant show by McQueen, the diffusion line of Alexander McQueen. It was more the exuberance of gutsy talents like Meadham Kirchhoff. This pair seem destined to become a member of the new fashion nomenclature.
