Mixed Up and Maxi-ed Out at Peter Som
Renata Espinosa
February 13th, 2010 @ 6:25 PM - New York
Good news for gym-goers this fall: you can forget about the lunges, the squats and the leg presses, because the hemlines are falling down, down, down.
Longer skirt lengths was just one of the messages at Peter Som’s psychedelic romp through a sumptuous bohemian lair somewhere just shy of Woodstock in ’69 at his Fall 2010 show on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 13, in New York.
“Kooky” and “escapist” was how Som described his glam rock affair of candy colored furs, mod floral maxi skirts, flowing chiffon dresses, long flared trousers, acidic plaids, swirling brushstroke prints, tie dyed ostrich feathers and pearlized petal paillettes – try saying that one five times fast.
The Fall 2010 season is so far shaping up to be an embrace of eccentric glamour, and Peter Som brought his uptown clients to that place, too, with piled on pieces mixed together in a way that a street style blogger would have a field day with, should they encounter this vision of Som out and about.
For those less keen on drinking the Kool-Aid cocktail of Muppet fur coats and mismatched patterns, however, Som still had plenty of luxe individual pieces like a pink ombre jacquard dress that looked like thinly pounded metallic foil, ladylike printed chiffon blouses paired with mid-calf chenille pencil skirts, an elegant broadtail coat and sensible cotton velvet trousers. Just iron out your hair, add dark burgundy lips and you’re good to go.
The show also featured some excellent multicolored platform granny boots by London shoemaker Charlotte Olympia for Peter Som that are sure to be snatched up by aspiring modern day Bibas.
