Lacoste’s New Wave After Party
February 13th, 2010 @ 1:17 PM - New York
Christophe Lemaire’s increasingly successful tenure at Lacoste took a fresh turn Saturday morning, Feb. 13, in New York with a snappy runway show that highlighted all this label’s virtues.
His vision of Fall 2010 is of a sporty youth attending smart drink soirees, where everyone is the epitome of health and favors bright New Wave hues.
Most people recognize this brand from its famous crocodile logo, earned by founder and champion tennis player René Lacoste because he used to take a crocodile bag onto court. Lemaire is not someone to run away from the obvious, so he equipped his backdrop with a flashing crocodile, whose colors matched the fashion on the runway.
Beginning with a space station putty gray, the color palette slowly injected more zest, with tropical greens, Outspan orange and lots of sinful Valentino-style reds.
Staged in the largest tent in Manhattan’s Bryant Park, which was packed to the gills despite the 10 a.m. start, the collection kicked off with lots of soft chic - either ribbed leggings for women with intriguing, almost hoof-like extensions and big sleeved winter jackets in felt wools, for men with cool narrow-sleeved cardigan jackets and a couple of beautiful waiters jackets, though in bright green suede and with neck closures that shouted French sports dandy.
Lemaire also broke new ground with slick new ergonomic desert boots, which we predict will be highly influential, and great cable knit pod coats that added even more distinction to the patrician casting.
Some might claim that fashion is a bad role model because it casts hyper-thin models who allegedly encourage eating disorders. Not at Lacoste, where the models on the runway were exemplars of fresh faced health, and even the legendarily sad-eyed Russian model Vlada Roslyakova looked like she had just come back from a week at 8,000 feet in the Alps.
New Wave chic for Old World places.
