Fashion Flash: Bold Bangs
Carol Lee Kim
December 18th, 2006 @ 10:44 AM - New York
From the catwalk to the red carpet, models and celebrities alike are swapping wavy tresses for bold bangs.
Fresh-faced models like Irina Lazareanu and Patricia Schmid were among the first beauties to helm the bang trend, and fashion houses like Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix quickly picked up the look du jour - YSL opted for disheveled bangs for their Fall 2006 collection, while Lacroix's models sported flapper-esque bangs and bobs in his Spring 2007 collection.
Mischa Barton's one-shouldered dress may have been a flop, but she saved her look with perfectly cut bangs and shimmering tresses at the Fashion Group International Night of Stars gala in New York in October. Meanwhile, At the 2006 American Music Awards in Los Angeles, Paris Hilton played it sleek and straight, sporting bangs that beautifully framed her eyes, whereas Nelly Furtado took the look to the extreme with bangs that hit just above her eyelash line.
To avoid unwanted eye injuries, take a style cue from Gwen Stefani, whose aviator frames provided style and protection from her slick platinum mane. And if you're not ready for a sea of bangs, Sandra Bullock's parted version is a perfect example of how to pull off the trend with ease and grace.
Small faces and fine features, however, can get lost if it's not done just right. Penelope Cruz makes it work with choppy bangs and an elegant updo that accents her cheekbones and elongates her neck.
No matter how bright your star wattage, bangs that are too short are prone to widen any face, as seen in the case of Rosario Dawson at the Glamour Magazine 2006 Women of the Year Awards.
Before you jump the gun and start cutting away, it's more than wise to spend a few extra bucks and hit your local hair salon to discuss how fresh fringe can best suit your facial features and frame.
